True to the words written on their green T-shirt ‘We make you run for the trophy', the team from Jeppiaar Engineering College, perhaps, had little to regret about.
The all-boys team won the first prize at the inter-collegiate dance finals of The Hindu NXg Campus Jive '10 here on Friday. The team defeated the crowd's favourite (going by the loud cheering) Loyola College who came second, while Anna University got the third prize.
Energy levels among the audience just kept going up and reached an exciting pitch during the last few performances, as 12 city college teams battled it out with different western dance styles. While hip-hop was the most common style, free style and jazz were spiced up in equal measures by a majority of the teams. The props too ranged from basket ball, hats, feature, shoes, umbrella and ropes.
Popping, locking, jumping and lyrical jazz were the dance styles the winning team gyrated with in full energy.
The team from Vinayaka Missions University set the ball rolling for an evening of energy-filled dance, pulsating music and special effects.
SNDB Vaishnav College for Arts and Science started with classical ballet to pick pace with their dance moves they described as “tricks”. Dazzling props was the hallmark of quite a few teams. For instance, the team from Crescent Engineering College had a spider web on stage with one of the dancer cringed on it and a few other gliding like snakes around a dark eerie backdrop. MOP Vaishnav College for Women, too, mesmerised as they danced with neon lights.
For the week's practice and bringing in the best of free style, jazz and hip-hop in the seven minutes that Stella Maris team danced, they sounded happy. Krumping especially is the toughest, where you need lot of energy, said the team members who are all in their first year of college.
Actors Reema Sen and Sonia Agarwal were the judges for the competition.
The competition was interspersed with performances by students of John Britto's Dance Company, and especially the one performed by the juniors received loud applause. Models also walked the ramp showcasing the latest from RMKV and GRT Jewellery.
