“Any invitation from your alma mater is special and when old students remember you, it’s like getting an award,” says 80-year-old Selvaraj, visibly excited to talk about his school.
The retired mathematics teacher from Santhome Higher Secondary School will walk down the memory lane on December 24, when students of the 1992-batch have their 25th year reunion — the first meet after they passed out of school.
“Selvaraj sir”, as the retired teacher is called, has been with the school over the last three decades. Sixty other teachers, from LKG to Class XII, will be felicitated on the occasion.
The “invitee committee” of the 1992 batch has been poring over school records and contacting old friends to get the contact numbers of all the teachers who had taught the batch.
“Over 40 teachers have agreed to come; some of them are in their 80s. Art teacher Ramanajun, known as Rahnu, is the oldest of them all. He is a resident of Mylapore.
Brother Selvanathan, who was headmaster during the years our batch was studying at the school; Sampath, chemistry teacher; Rangaswamy, physical education instructor, and Srinivasa Rao, cricket coach, are among others who have agreed to come,” says A.R. Sathyanarayanan, a member of the invitee committee.
In 2014, the 1992 batch started a WhatsApp group with three Santhomians.
Today, 170 former students are part of the group.
Six batchmates are coordinating the meet, where they are trying to touch base with as many old students as possible.
“We had around 200 students in our batch and 50% of them are not in the country; so, we have been connecting with friends for the last one month,” says Sathyanarayanan.
The programme will also have fun events, stalls for children and photo booths which will enable old students to take pictures at their favourite spots in the school.
