All’s not well in the suburbs

Residents of Avadi, Pattabhiram and Mittinamallee have been regularly facing power cuts this year though the overall power supply position in the State has been positive. While some of the shutdowns could be attributed to transmission problems caused by the snapping of high tension lines and the corona effect blacking out the entire city, many more keep occurring intermittently, say residents.

T. Sadagopan, a consumer activist in Pattabhiram, said on Monday that power supply was disrupted for more than four hours. Those in the added areas of the Corporation have been complaining about power cuts and low-voltage problems for several years. The residents of Kathirvedu, Madhanankuppam, Collector Nagar and Puthagaram find silent load shedding happening regularly during summer.

A senior official of Tangedco said the issue of power cuts in Avadi and Pattabhiram would be solved once the 33 kilo volt (KV) substation in Mittinamallee is constructed. For Kathirvedu, a substation is proposed in Kolathur which would improve the transmission network.
