Officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Chennai airport have installed an additional in-line baggage scanner at the new international terminal.
An official release from AAI said the scanner was originally meant for Srinagar airport. When the authorities decided to shift the machine to Chennai, the supplier demanded a huge amount and more time to accomplish the task. The manufacturer of the machine also refused to undertake the task of shifting it. That’s when Chennai airport officials undertook the task themselves.
The x-ray machine was dismantled at Srinagar airport part by part, and the inter-connecting cables were removed after noting down colour codes and termination details. The optical fibre cable links, pre-tunnel’s light barriers, and motor connections were carefully removed and packed properly as per the technical manual. The complete machine was packed and loaded on to two trailers with waterproof covers.
At Chennai airport, a temporary metal platform was erected at the level of the mezzanine to shift the machine. All installation work was carried out day and night by an in-house team. The work included critical alignment on the conveyor belt and the x- ray generator, which were disturbed during the transportation from Srinagar.
After installing the machine, a trial run was successfully completed, the release said.
