All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam workers will stage demonstration in Tiruvarur on Thursday to condemn the government for its ‘failure' in getting Cauvery water for kuruvai cultivation in the Delta districts.
In a statement here on Wednesday, party general secretary Jayalalithaa said owing to denial of water to Tamil Nadu by Karnataka as per the order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, delta farmers could not take up kuruvai cultivation. Even those farmers, who had raised crops with the help of bore wells, were put to hardship as they were not getting assured power supply.
While the delta farmers were in distress, local people in Tiruvarur were suffering from lack of basic facilities. Construction of underground drainage system in the town was going on for the last four years and major roads in the town had been damaged causing inconvenience to public.
Protesting the local administration's apathy to people's issues, the party would organise the demonstration near the local bus stand.
The agitation would be led by party's organising secretary C. Ponnaiyan.
Protest in Coimbatore
In another statement, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she would lead a demonstration against the rise in fuel prices in Coimbatore on July 13.
She said the protest would also target other issues such as deteriorating law and order situation in the State, inflation, severe power crisis, spurious drugs, drinking water shortage, sand mining and pilferage of ration goods.
The protest will be held on the V.O.C. grounds. Among those who will participate in the protest meeting will be members of MGR Mandram. J. Jayalalithaa Peravai, and local body representatives.
