An AIADMK functionary was hacked to death by a gang in Teynampet on Tuesday. Seven persons surrendered in an Egmore court in connection with the murder.

Police said S Arumugam, a resident of Barwa Nagar in Teynampet and deputy secretary of the AIADMK in Ward 115, was at a tea shop when six men, who had come in a car, hacked him to death. He was rushed to Government Royapettah hospital but declared brought dead.

Arumugam was a financier and police suspect that the murder could be over some financial dealings. In the evening, seven persons — Bala alias Balakumar, Ramalingam, Sundar, Muthu, Venkatesan, Thangam and Raju — surrendered before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore. “Arumugam had employed them men for some construction work earlier,” said a police officer.
