The demand of a traffic constable to produce original driving licence from a motorist on Wednesday resulted in a group of advocates assaulting the constable and later a duty doctor at a hospital.
On Wednesday night, Sathish, a grade I traffic constable and a traffic inspector, were on duty checking vehicles near the War Memorial. At 8 p.m., they intercepted motorist Kumar of Choolai and asked him to produce his driving licence.
Lingesh, an advocate who came in another bike, asked them to let go of Mr. Kumar. As the constable insisted on the licence, the advocate abused and threatened him. A few other friends of the advocate joined him and attacked the police constable.
When other police personnel on duty chased them, the group entered Annai Sathia Nagar, where the residents beat them up.
A couple of injured advocates went to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital at midnight for treatment. At the hospital, duty doctor Prabhu asked them to get a no objection certificate from the police station on the premises as per rules. Instead of obtaining it, the advocates assaulted the duty doctor besides creating ruckus, police said.
In another incident, police said advocates assaulted police personnel at Valluvar Street in Purasawalkam. Around midnight, a group of advocates were eating at a roadside eatery when a beat policeman questioned them. They assaulted the constable. A sub-inspector rescued the constable, police said. On Thursday, 200 doctors of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital staged a protest demanding action against the advocates.
