A. Aruna, a 27-year-old advocate, married S. Somasundaram, a 38-year-old man serving a life term, at Vyasarpadi on Sunday.
Somasundaram, also known as Somu, is serving the sentence at Puzhal prison for his involvement in the murder of a former legislator.
Aruna, a distant relative of Somu, had approached Madras High Court, seeking special leave to Somu so they could marry.
The court obliged and granted 10 days leave to Somu who was released from Puzhal on Saturday.
On Sunday, the bride and the groom, along with their relatives, friends and advocates reached the wedding venue, Peelikkaan Muneeswaran Temple in Vyasarpadi. A large number of policemen were posted outside the temple
The wedding was held according to traditional Hindu customs, and a little past 9 a.m., the couple drove to their home.
Somu is serving a life term for his role in the murder of M.K. Balan, a former All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) MLA from Saidapet, in 2001.
Somu has been in prison since 2002, police sources said.
