Five members of a family were arrested on charges of assaulting an advocate on the premises of the Police Commissionerate in Egmore on Tuesday morning. The advocate was accompanying a young woman from the same family to lodge a police complaint.

Police sources said Sivashanmugarajan, an advocate with the Madras High Court, had come to the Commissionerate with Kavitha (20), a resident of Puzhudivakkam, who wanted to lodge a complaint against her parents, who were allegedly forcing her to marry an elderly man.

Kavitha's parents and a few relatives reached the reception area of the Commissionerate and confronted her and Sivashanmugarajan.

Suddenly, they started assaulting Sivashanmugarajan. Police personnel on duty rushed in and brought the situation under control, sources added.

Following the incident, Egmore police registered a case and arrested Kavitha's parents Kuppusamy and Maithili, brother Mani, uncle Gajendran and aunt Gajalakshmi, sources added.
