Actor Mansoor Ali Khan, who has been lodged in the Salem central prison, observed a day-long fast on Saturday to protest against the Salem–Chennai green corridor project and the rejection of his bail plea by a court in Omalur.

The actor was arrested by the Theevattipatti police on June 17 for making defamatory speeches in the villages surrounding Kaamalapuram on May 3, in which he stated that he would attack the authorities if they tried to acquire farmland for the eight-lane road project.

The actor’s bail plea was rejected by the Omalur judicial magistrate court on Friday.

Mr. Khan, who began the fast in the morning, withdrew it in the evening after the prison officials intervened, sources said.

Duo booked

The Jayankondam police have registered a case against two members of Makkal Adhikaram for circulating pamphlets against the Salem-Chennai green corridor project and the police firing on anti-Sterlite protesters in Thoothukudi. One of them has been arrested.

Police sources said Kolanji alias Kathiravan, 49, and Sekar alias Gunasekaran distributed pamphlets allegedly containing statements aimed at disturbing public harmony and causing fear among the public.

Kathiravan was arrested on Friday and produced before a judicial magistrate in Jayankondam, who remanded him in judicial custody. A hunt was on to nab Gunasekaran, police sources said.
