Plastic surgeon V. Jayaraman, who treated her till the end said she had responded to treatment even on Monday. "We did our best, but she had a cardiac arrest. We tried to revive her twice," he added.
Vinodhini, a 23-year-old woman, who suffered grievous burns three months ago in an acid attack by a man whose advances she had rejected, succumbed to the injuries on Tuesday at a private hospital here.
The crime took place in Karaikal, an enclave of the Puducherry Union Territory, on November 14 last year.
Doctors at the hospital said she had suffered a cardiac arrest. Plastic surgeon V. Jayaraman, who was treating her since the attack, said, “We twice tried to revive her heart. We also gave her blood. But the protein levels were low as she did not have enough nourishment.”
Vinodhini, a B.Tech graduate, was employed in a private company in the city and lived in a working women’s hostel in Saidapet. Her father, Jayapal, is a watchman in a private school in Karaikal. The assailant, Suresh, alias Appu, was a family acquaintance. Suresh was a construction labourer who had befriended Jayapal and over a period of time had also loaned him money.
On November 14, Vinodhini was walking with her father to the Karaikal bus terminus after visiting her parents for Deepavali. Before she could board a bus to Chennai, Suresh accosted them and threw nitric acid at her. Vinodhini and her father Jayapal suffered injuries.
“Though Vinodhini’s father had returned the money, Suresh kept pestering him and once we even lodged a complaint with the police. He was reprimanded but he continued taunting the father every time he got an opportunity. But we never thought he would attack Vinodhini. He had even sought her hand in marriage, but Jayapal had pointed out that she was highly qualified and advised him to give up such thoughts,” Vinodhini’s uncle Ramesh said.
After the attack, she was rushed to a private hospital in Karaikal, where first aid was administered. She was then referred to JIPMER, Puducherry. On November 15, she was transferred to the Government Kilpauk Hospital, Chennai, which has a burns ward that specialises in treating acid attack victims. But the injuries were extensive, with her nose, eyes and ears, suffering irreversible damage. After Dr. Jayaraman retired from KMC, she sought to be moved to a private hospital where he could treat her.
For several weeks doctors continued dressing her wounds and waited for the acid reaction to subside so that they could assess the damage. But within a week it became apparent that she had lost sight in both eyes.

Acid attack become a solution to those culprits who are unable to hold
their abnormality.dis is just unacceptable;strict laws should be amended
asap.Women are no where safe in this country.
may her soul rest in peace :(
He should pay compensation as well as corporal punishment should be
given & tortured or stoned to death or burn him alive, otherwise will be
repeated everywhere, no justice will prevail in India hereafter.
The guilty deserves nothing less than life imprisonment for such heinous
crime. Implementation of strict laws will only ensure that similar cases
won't be repeated. My heartfelt condolences to the Family of the victim.
What a senseless waste of a precious life. All of us are culpable in this. 1. Our society has allowed such thoughts to seep into Suresh's mind. 2. Even if the thought of harming occurred in the mind, our society hasn't provided the counsel to change that mind. 3. Even if the mind did not change, the society has not put in place enough deterrent to prevent the person from carrying out the attack. 4. Even if the attack happened, we have not come together to help the victim to get the best available treatment and support. 5. And of course, finally, the least we could do is apprehend and punish the culprit swiftly.
My deep condolences to Vinodhini's parents. I know the sort of pain they are at as I lost of my 5yr old 6 moths ago.
In other words, am happy for Vinodhini as her pain ended rather prolonged by seeing and living with this pain for longer years.
Oh! my dear Sai Baba, please help her soul rest in peace.
Death penalty should be given to the attacker. That only will deter further
incidents. This the high time we all should support .
In addition to laws I believe there has to be a fundamental perspective change on how
women are perceived in our society. Laws alone cannot prevent these tragedies from
happening.
The culprit deserves nothing less than life imprisonment for such
heinous crime. Hope justice will be delivered in a fast track manner.
I believe that it is high time that we address violence against women.
The Delhi rape case woke up the nation - it is now time to come up with
laws that deter violence against women, and an enforcement mechanism
that delivers speedy justice to the victims. I hope that this case is
tried in a fast track court, and the accused given exemplary punishment
(life imprisonment), if found guilty.
This henious crime is a murder. Capital punishment is the answer.
In another article it said financial compensation should be granted for the victims family. Why
is that all these finacial support flows through only after a victim dies? How about contributing
for the treatment and help the victim survive. The plastic surgeon has clearly stated that
better care is available in the West and not in India due to several factors which I fully agree
and understand. If proper financial assistance was provided may be she could have
survived.
It is so painful to see her father in this picture and cant imagine the state of her mother.
Sentence Suresh Kumar to death or throw the same acid on him and let him die without any
treatment.
Change the law according to modern society to save people.
Our deep condolence to the parents....
Its time to change laws. The offenders who performing mercyless actions against women (like delhi rape case) should be changed to women by surgery. this can be a big punishment than death sentence and others will have a fear before attempting.
she was my colleague at Just Dial Ltd., you know she was a brave girl
and very intelligent too and also she was a topper at office. after i
heard this news on 16th nov.2012. felt really very bad and many of our
colleagues went and saw her.but i couldn't meet her others went and saw.
after i heard she expaired felt really bad and total mood was off. and
today from morning telling to all my friends that my friend(Vinodini)
died..may god really bless her .Suresh should be jailed
atleat for 2 years after that he never gets marry in his life..
Very heart rending. The culprit should be given such a punishment that would deter others from carrying out such crimes. Acid attacks have increased over the years. The availability of acid seems to be quite easy. All corrosive acids have to be immediately brought under the purview of strict regulation so that their availability is restricted. There could be downside to this initiative, but it would at lease minimise if not totally prevent such attacks.
Krrishna.
My deepest condolences to Vinodihini and her family; may her soul rest in peace. It is yet another sad day for our Country for she has lost yet another brave daughter. Justice needs to be done! The punishment should be exemplary and should act as a deterrent to all those who can think that all they need is a bottle of acid to shatter someone, scar them for life and even kill them. It pains to even imagine what this young lady in her prime must have gone through this past three months. While Vinodhini was blinded and suffering a slow death, our government was busy pandering to fringe religious right wing groups on a completely different, totally under-important saga of banning a film.
Male population in India is showing regressive evolution in behavior and
experts must come forward with some solutions to avoid the recurrence of
such incidences in future.
This marks a very sad day. Yesterday there was a news item about her recovery and today she dies. My prayers are with her family.
I saw a video of her last speech at vikatan.com and pray the punishment she wanted becomes true for the guy who attacked her.
I remember those good old days when travelling in bus to go to college
we use to get up to give seats to girls. Also there used to be special
seperate seats for girls. These days there is sudden change in culture.
Who is responsible.None but we who follow western style of life based
on TV,Cinema and exciting web sites(Permitted in India also) on
computers.Husband and wife busy with their jobs to make more and more
money in absence of their parents.Who will guide kids? They learn what
they see.Look at the provoking dresses of girls!Look at the jumping
minds of young boys!
What is/has happened the Suresh(perpetrator) when all of this happening. I atleast hope he has been arrested and dealt with appropriately. India is not a safe place for women.
If the culprit is roaming free, it is a shame. He needs to pay for his crime in such a way that other youth will understand what will happen if they try something like this. Why are the Tamilnadu women not agitating? Is it because there are too many incidents like this and what does it matter to agitate attitude.
I absolutely agree with some of the comments above. This case deserves the same level of concern and outrage as shown for the Delhi rape victim.
THe minimum punishment for acid attack should be a hard labour life sentence. Or better, just put them in one of the Concentration camps.
I fully agree with Mr.Dinakarn's comments. Why can't the state government take responsibility of the victim's care? Surely spending money in innocent victims is more important than gifting crores to successful sports persons (like V.Anand recently who is already mega rich).
Having said this, it is unlikely that the government will take notice of the people comments posted here. No point in me moaning.
RIP Vinodhini.
It was alleged that the local police did not take action to file FIR immediately after the complaint. What action was taken agasinst the Police? Moreover the three persons who came along with the accused have been cited as witnesses and not abetting the crime. What happened to arrest of the seller of the nitric acid to a construction worker? More over it is understood that expert opinion is that half a litre of acid had been used
We dont know what is going on TN & Pondicherry govrnment. Hey God !! don't you have eyes..?
Why there is no law to restrict the sale of acid to public . Inspite of regular acid attacks on girls in particular breaking out in newspapers / TV Channels , the union and state governments are dumb to act .
After every serious acid attacks , various governments just say that they would study to enact some laws but fail to act .
who takes the responsibility in failure to save her life.POLICE
LETHARGIC nature in giving a stern warning to accused when the
harassment was reported before incident,GOVERNMENT IRRESPONSIBLE
NATURE in not even guiding her parents to admit her in a hospital best
in service (either in INDIA OR ABROAD),CENSOR BOARD that encourages
freak incidents and corrupting younger generation,PARENTS OF ACCUSED
in not instilling moral values to their son.
‘An eye for an eye may not be correct.“Vengeance is mine, I will
repay, says the Lord.” in Holy Bible.
May her soul rest in peace.God give Courage to her parents in
overcoming the sorrowful incident.
It is appaling to know that justice has not prevailed for this young
soul, who has not only been neglected by the law but also to see a young
fit and well 23 yr old to have beeen shuttled arround for medical care
and end up in a cardiac arrest, there is no pardoning the doctor for
such dissmissive comments we tried our best, if you had then she would
not be where she is today ???
unless severe punishment is imposed on these type of culprits, this type
of crime cannot be arrested. law must be made strict. what a loss to the
parents. who will compensate
There was a time when matriarchal society prevailed and excelled. But as times have changed over the centuries,we can see that humanity has been brought down to earth.I would site the cine industry playing aa big part in this.Of course the word "Karma" no longer holding any value in this country dominated by "middle class and upper middle class" i dont think woman have a safe future.Unless and until someone really worthy comes to the fore i am afraid the "INEVITABLE" will continue to prevail and keep happening.
Mr Dinakaran's comments deserve a serious look. For the Madras Administration not to have a serious look, particularly from a Chief Minister who is a woman, reflects the total indifference of an intolerant, backward society. The moron who inflicted this wound, pain and death, must serve a life sentence of harsh labour. This case deserves the same level of concern and outrage as shown for the Delhi rape victim.
India is not a safe country for women.
only strong laws& transperancy in enforcement will make the difference?otherwise these kind of abuse will happen!
Law should be made severe. So sad how a girl who suffered the pain? losing two eyes.:'(
We should follow arab style "Beheading" in public. will be the only solution
High time such cases of attack on women and girls should be refered to Fast track courts and culprits should be punished without delay
Justice delayed is justice denied
Very sad to see this news. Let her soul RIP.
Now its time for the court to give proper verdict.
wondering why the patient was not supported by government.
Is it because this case was not highlighted much in media??
The government can outsource the protection of Indian woman to capable
MNCs or foreign governments. Protective mask manufacturing will be a
good business idea! Our eyes are filled with bloody tears heads down in
shame!
This is a clear case where the Government should have involved itself and assisted the family in the treatment of the victim. This is just like the gang-rape incident, if not worse, where the victim was air-lifted to Singapore by the Govt. for better treatment. For me, throwing acid at someone is one of the grievous crimes and should be approached in that way. There needs to be a national uproar about this incident, just like the rape-incident and the criminal needs to apprehended and given the harshest punishment. If there are no laws to award a fitting punishment, then we need a revision of the law for this type of crimes.
May her soul rest in Peace
It is very sad to note that women suffer so much inspite of tall claims
by police and the legal system that women are given all the protection.
Each individual in this country should understand and respect female
and their freedom. It should be strongly inculcated in our primary level
education system and should be reinforced in the later part of the
education system also. My heartfelt condolences to the family members
and to the parents of Vinodhini.
The youth must be drowned in a drum full of acid.Let him face the trauma of a acid victim.
May God rest the Soul of J. Vinodhini in peace.
I request The Hindu to report periodically on the progress or the
lack there of in this case until that sick guy is put behind
bars....
I hope Arundhati Roy will write an article on the fate of girl and her family. Also THe Hindu will write editorial. But where is the criminal? He should not be unnecessarily put to harsh treatment... After all our collective heart is normally with criminals.
The Offender should be punished using the same acid... How do her
parents bear?????
May hear soul rest in peace and hearty condolences to the family...
There seems to be no wretchedness or evil that some people will not descend to indulge. It is very sad and unfortunate that Ms. Vinodhini had to suffer the gruesome acid attack. The loss is immeasurable and, alas, agonisingly, it is her family alone which will know the full depth of the tragedy.
I wonder what the people who champion the abolishment of the death sentence will have to say in this case. Will they still say that the vile scoundrel deserves to be given a chance for reformation?
I think it is only fair that the parents alone, in this case, decide the punishment for their daughter's killer.
why our government does not take action on these anti-social and inhumanity acts. this is not going to stop untill and unless a political leader's daughter is not subjected to it.. why they don't care about poor people.. don't we have a right to choice. what is police in that state is doing.. when i listen to such news i can't tell how much sadness and anger surrounds me.. i fell that culprits should be given to public.. and let the whole world see.. the justice of india.. shame on police, political leaders and the society- is this democracy.
To reduce these kinds of attack against women, the Governement should make necessary amendments in the law and order applicable to these kinds of culprits. There should be restrictions in the sale of harmful products like acids. Only people having the license to buy should be sold and Schools and colleges who need these things in their labs should ensure that they sre not handled anyone else other than the authorised staff.
I hope the law of the land makes an example of this incident by awarding
the severest of punishments to the culprit.May her soul rest in peace.
These actions are inspired from the movie like 18/9.
Govt should send strong signal to such acts, by hanging the culprit.
I feel terribly distressed as if my own granddaughter has died. If only she had been given a part of the attention given to the Delhi victim, she wud have survived.
Very Sad, Hope her soul rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences to the
family.
She leaves a note in everyone's mind of course.I feel very sad over the tragedy that unfolded into her life .Nothing has been mentioned about the condition of the culprit in the report. The incidents involving acid attacks should be considered for highest punishment in the Indian penal code because the condition of the victim aftermath an acid attack is often terribly horrible.
many people emulate the movies, where the same kind of scenes are abundant.People follow the villains in the movies who is seen throwing acids for the revenge of cheap love instincts.
From the past it is observed that the victim of an acid attack has much more torments in store other than that of the pain inflicted on her.The tormnts include social stigma, scornful attitude from family members and finally because of being not in a position to show face in the public, the lack of consideration and help from government.
Why not the govenrment stipulate tough laws, may be death penalty for acid attacks?
This is indeed a very sad moment for all of us. The culprit should be hanged. What kind of a barbaric society are we living in? My heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
I don't understand the concept of hurting someone when the emotions are
reflected. It gives only one choice but to interpret that the person who
did this to her has lived with the belief that women are his toy for
playing around. He thought shall she not have any opinion or feelings of
her own and no matter what she should yield to his will. He belongs to a
mental asylum.
On the one hand, you say, you love the girl, [ maybe she does NOT likes you], on the other you throw acid on her.
How can you do it?
My deep condolences!
A very sad incident. May her soul rest in peace. How was that guy penalized?
Very very sad indeed. We can not bring her back to life. What we can do are:
(1) Films must stop depicting scenes of throwing acid on people. Film producers owe this duty to our society.
(2) Sale of acid must be restricted.
(3) Very stringent and deterrent punishment must be awareded to the culprits and this must be given wide publicity.
NGOs must push for these vigorously.
Heart felt condolences. Punish the culprit!
Govt should hang the youth who caused this.
May her sole rest in peace and her atatcker be pubsished such that no one else dares to ruin another innocent girl's life again.
Very sad. May God console her parents!
