A twenty-six-year old woman committed suicide in Purasawalkam, after she was blamed for a theft.

The police said A. Jayachitra was one of the six tenants of a house on Shanmugarayan Street in Purasawalkam. A few days ago, she visited another tenant, T. Juliet (39).

On Thursday evening, Juliet and the owner of the house, S. Thilaga (45), charged Jayachitra with stealing a mobile phone and Rs. 1,500 in cash from Juliet’s house. The women verbally abused Jayachitra and accused her of having committed such thefts over a long period.

Upset, Jayachitra hanged herself on Friday.

Residents said, though the Vepery police initially delayed in filing a case due to objections raised by Thilaga and other tenants, a case was registered after relatives and neighbours of Jayachitra stormed the police station on Friday evening and demanded registration of a case against Juliet.

Juliet was arrested and remanded to custody, the police said.
