A week after fatally assaulting his father with a wooden log, a 19-year-old youth surrendered to Revenue and Police officials in Peerkankaranai near Tambaram on Saturday evening.
The Peerkankaranai police said Thanikachalam (47) was living on Naavalar Street, Srinivasa Nagar. His wife Valli died some years ago. He had two sons — Ganesan (19) and Surendran (16). Addicted to liquor, he even tried to sell the house registered in the name of his wife.
Fearing that he would sell the property, Valli's parents, living in Cuddalore, transferred the ownership of the house to the names of Ganesan and Surendran.
Further, the boys left for Cuddalore, where they remained in the care of their grandparents as Thanikachalam would beat them often under the influence of alcohol.
The boys would call on their father occasionally, police said.
On December 19, Ganesan had come to Peerkankaranai and, Thanikachalam, under the influence of liquor, assaulted him with a wooden log. Ganesan grabbed the log and hit his father on the head. Thanikachalam collapsed and fell unconscious. Ganesan locked the house and left for Cuddalore.
He returned to Peerkankaranai on Saturday evening and noticed his father's body lying inside the house in a decomposed state.
As the house was located in a remote corner, neighbours had not noticed the foul smell emanating from the building.
Ganesan went to the Village Administrative Officer and narrated the incident. He was then taken to the Peerkankaranai police station, where a case was registered. He was produced before a Judicial Magistrate and remanded to a juvenile home in the city.
