Tamil Nadu is among the States leading in organ donation, but much more needs to be done throughout the country to popularise the concept, said experts.

At a campaign organised by the National Foundation for Liver Research on Friday, Mohamed Rela, director, Institute of Liver Disease & Transplantation, Global Health City, Chennai, said the field of organ donation is still primitive in the country, but it is growing at a rapid pace.

A.L. Vijay’s sensitive short film, Thank You , on organ donation was officially released on the occasion by Prannoy Roy, managing director of NDTV, who also pledged his support for the cause.

He said, “Twenty years back, there were only a few voices talking about transplantation. Today, India has the largest number of transplantations being done, and Tamil Nadu is in the forefront.”

J. Radhakrishnan, health secretary, Tamil Nadu, Elizabeth Pomfret, president of the International Liver Transplantation Society, Bharat Joshi, British deputy high commissioner in Chennai, and Nigel Heaton, director of Liver Transplantation, King’s College Hospital, were the other dignitaries who attended the programme.
