The Tamilnadu Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation Ltd, popularly known by its Aavin brand, is planning to modernise four of its dairies, which would help supply an additional two lakh litres of milk to Chennai in six months.

New equipment

“We are bringing in new equipment for our dairies at Madhavaram, Ambattur, Sholinganallur and Kakkalur that supply 10.5 lakh litres of milk daily to the city now. The funds are being granted from the National Mission for Protein Supplements,” said a source in the Department of Dairy Development.

The Madhavaram dairy, which supplies 3.30 lakh litres to localities in north Chennai, would get Rs.1.82 crore under the modernisation project.

The facility in Ambattur, which supplies 3.40 lakh litres to central Chennai areas would be allocated Rs.2.52 crore, while Sholinganallur, from where the areas in south Chennai get 3.80 lakh litres milk, would be given Rs.1.72 crore under the project.

The Kakkalur dairy in the neighbouring Tiruvallur district, which was revived last year, would get Rs.4 crore to upgrade the facilities. The dairy processes 7,000 litres presently and after the modernisation its output would increase to 50,000 litres per day.

Production to be doubled

The Ambattur dairy, which produces ice cream, khoa, curd, buttermilk and yoghurt, would get an additional Rs.1 crore to modernise the equipment used for allied by-products. With this the quantum of allied products would be doubled.

The present production of 2,000 litres of ice cream would be doubled to 4,000 litres. The dairy produces two tonnes of khoa per day and 5,000 litres of curd, buttermilk and yoghurt per day. Tenders have been floated for all these works and technical evaluation of the bids is under way, the source added.
