As many as 1.4 lakh persons more can become consumers of Aavin’s milk in Chennai if the State’s cooperative dairy body meets the State government’s revised sales target for the city.
At present, Aavin sells 11.5 lakh litres per day (LLPD) and a consumer, on an average, buys 1.4 litres every day. At a meeting chaired by Dairy Development Minister B.V. Ramanaa on Tuesday, the government asked Aavin to sell two lakh litres more in Chennai on a daily basis, taking the overall figure to 13.5 LLPD.
The meeting was held to chalk out measures to increase the sale of milk and other dairy products following the rise in procurement prices.
As for the rest of the State, District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Unions were set a target of 11.5 LLPD, 1.5 lakh litres higher.
On Monday, the overall procurement went up to 26.32 lakh litres from the average figure of 20.7 lakh litres a day. However, this was less than what Aavin achieved two years ago – 27.15 lakh litres on November 27, 2012. At that time, the enhanced procurement was attributed to a number of factors, including a ban on export of milk powder.
An official release said that steps were under way to touch the procurement figure of 30 lakh litres a day.
