Modernisation of Aavin’s dairy in Kakkalur in Tiruvallur district is likely to be completed by March 2013.
The works that include the addition of a cold room and packing facilities would result in another one lakh litre of milk being supplied every day to Chennai. The facility in Kakkalur, which was revived last year, processes 7,000 litres presently. The Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Ltd. has also taken up work to augment the capacity for processing milk at its dairies in Ambattur, Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. The three dairies supply 3.45 lakh litres, 3.25 lakh litres and 4.08 lakh litres, respectively, to the city every day.
Dairy development minister V. Moorthy, who inspected the four dairies recently, said that all of them were being modernised at a cost of Rs. 6.5 crore. The works on the three facilities are expected to be completed by June, he said, urging officials to speed up the works.
When all four projects are completed, Aavin would be able to augment its supply to 13 lakh litres of milk a day from the present 11 lakh litres.
The Ambattur milk-based products dairy that makes ice cream, khoa, curd, buttermilk and yoghurt is also being modernised at a cost of Rs. 11 crore. With the completion of this work in June 2013, the production would be more than doubled.
