The milk major had introduced chocolates and milk shakes in seven flavours, leading to an increase in revenue

This summer has been good for Aavin, the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation.

Milk-based products saw an increase in sales by 100 per cent in the city. Icecream sales doubled from 680 litres to 1,200 litres a day. The figure for buttermilk sales jumped from 1,400 litres to 4,100 litres a day.

The milk major had introduced chocolates, milk shakes in seven flavours, and increased the production capacity of its icecream unit, leading to an increase in revenue. The months of April, May and June witnessed sales worth Rs. 1.50 crore each of milk-based products alone, said a source in Aavin.

Similarly, the sale of milk in the city jumped from 10.50 lakh litres during last June to 11.35 lakh litres this month. A total of 7.40 lakh litres are being sold through consumer cards against last year’s 6.80 lakh litres. Retail sale too has increased from 3.05 lakh litres to 3.30 lakh litres. The revenue from milk, per day, in the city stood at Rs. 31 crore, which is an increase of around 9 per cent from last year.

Seetha Gnansekaran of Choolaimedu said she was satisfied with the quality of milk supplied. “We purchase two litres of milk and when April came we thought the milk would curdle as it normally does. But it did not. Leakages have also become less,” she said.

However, many consumers feel that Aavin needs to strengthen its sales network. “I do not find Aavin products in all supermarkets. I cannot spend time searching for an Aavin parlour to buy icecream when there is a parlour of another brand nearby,” said Priya Jayaprakash of Anna Nagar.

Aavin has a total of 75 outlets that are managed by its own staff and another 150 that are franchise outlets.
