In coming months, the number of educational institutions that have Aavin parlours is expected to go up considerably. The move follows the positive response to the first batch of Aavin parlours set up at a cross-section of institutions, including Rajalakshmi Engineering College in Thandalam and Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Chetpet.
“This initiative from Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producer’s Federation Limited (TCMPF) has paid rich dividends and the contracts have been signed to start more parlours in the coming months,” said a senior Aavin official.
The latest addition to the list is Sakthi Mariamman Engineering College, Thandalam where an Aavin outlet named ‘Amma Parlour’ was opened recently. The parlour was inaugurated by P. Tamilselvan, deputy general manager (marketing), Aavin.
Among institutions showing an interest in establishing these parlours are Vel Tech High Tech Dr. Rangarajan Dr. Sakunthala Engineering College (Avadi), Saveetha University (Thandalam), Magna Engineering College (Magaral), Vivekananda Vidyalaya School (Chromepet) and Zion Group of Schools (Selaiyur).
The success of these parlours is largely defined by their role in developing entrepreneurial skills in students.
Educational institutions keen on setting up these parlours have to provide 100 sq. ft. of space with electricity connection and a shelter. Aavin will provide bottle coolers, deep freezers and milk boilers on a monthly rental basis. Parlours could be managed either by individuals or a group of students or by the management. Aavin will supply milk and milk products at retail rates. The students can sell it at maximum retail price.
As per another arrangement, the college has to provide 100 sq. ft. space in a building (or) space to keep the mild-steel structure in a prominent location with power and water. Aavin will pay a nominal monthly rent for the space. The Electricity Board charges will be paid as per actuals. Aavin will install its own equipment for the parlour operation and sell all products at maximum retail price.
While welcoming the initiative, N. Vijayan, principal and correspondent of Zion Group of Schools, Selaiyur, said, “We are planning to open an outlet at Alwin Memorial School before the end of April and our other three schools will have these parlours by beginning of the next academic year.”
“Kulfi ice cream, recently introduced, is a big hit with many children. They also sell butter and ghee, which parents buy while dropping and picking up their wards,” said Bhargavi, a student of Maharishi Vidya Mandir.
