Adding variety to breakfast tables, Aavin has re-introduced cheese and table butter after a gap of five years. The cheese is made by the Nilgiris District Cooperative Milk Producers Union and marked by Aavin at Rs. 85 per 200 gram pack. Its table butter comes in half kilo packs and is priced at Rs.130 per pack. The Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation, which manufactures the table butter in its Erode and Salem dairies, is in the process of introducing smaller sized packs.

An increase in milk procurement is one of the reasons why the Federation has introduced more milk-based products. A senior Aavin official said that in the last one year, Aavin has not only recovered lost ground but also was recording very high milk procurement of 26 lakh litres daily in the State. “We are introducing more variety to encourage sale of milk-based products,” the official said.

On Monday, Highways Minister Edappadi K.Palanisamy and Dairy Development Minister V. Moorthy launched apple flavoured milk, banana flavoured milk, pineapple flavoured milk and carrot milk shake in Salem. These products will be available in Chennai in 15 days.

Last month alone, a total of 65,000 packets of mango milkshake were sold in Chennai. With this, the mango milkshake has become one of Aavin’s largest selling products. Last year in June 40 tonnes of ghee were sold in Chennai and this year it was 90 tonnes.

Chennai consumes around two lakh packs of 200 ml flavoured milk, and 30,000 mango juice packs every month.

It also consumes 35,000 half litre packs of Delight milk, 10,000 packets UHT toned milk and 10,000 packets of standardised every month.

Tetra product plant

Aavin has plans to use buildings that had earlier housed its now defunct cattle feed unit at its Madhavaram dairy plant to establish a tetra product manufacturing plant. “The civil structures are in good condition and can be used for other purposes. This unit will be in addition to the one at Salem where currently products including flavoured milk, mango milk shake, mango juice, and toned and standardised milk are being processed and packed,” an official explained.
