With three major events in the Hindu Tamil almanac — ‘Aadi Perukku’, ‘Aadi Amavasya’ and ‘Guru Peryachi’ — falling on Tuesday, a large number of people thronged water bodies in the State to take part in the festivities.
Following the release of water in Cauvery, the ghats along the river witnessed families and newly-weds taking a dip. .
Since ‘Aadi Amavasya’ is considered a special occasion to perform tharpanam (rituals in memory of forefathers), priests were a busy lot and many could be seen along the water bodies where pujas were performed. Special pujas were performed to the river Cauvery at Mukkombu, Srirangam and the Grand Anaicut. The Triveni Sangamam of the South, the confluence of three rivers — Bhavani, Cauvery and invisible Agaya Gangai — at the Bhavani Kooduthurai Temple in Erode witnessed unusually large crowds.
At Hogenakkal over 1.50 lakh persons took a dip in the Cauvery. Several thousands offered took holy dip in the Tamirabharani and Rameswaram.
