The civic body has put to rest residents’ concerns over the approaching deadline for biometric enrolment under Aadhaar.

The Corporation said it would continue the process of enumeration for the National Population Register (NPR) until every single resident in the city was covered.

This announcement comes in the wake of advertisements by the directorate of census operations, in newspapers, on a time-table for biometric enrolment.

On Wednesday, the Corporation said permanent NPR centres to be opened in all zonal offices would continue to operate even after the process of biometric enrolment was wrapped up at the temporary centres.

The process of Aadhaar number generation and biometric data enrolment for NPR in the State has covered four crore persons so far. As many as 12.45 lakh residents in the old city limits participated in the camps held in 75 localities. Biometric enrolment (photograph, and iris and fingerprint scans) through the camps will take place in 40 more localities in the city. Operators certified by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) facilitate generation of an Aadhaar number by matching the demographic data in the NPR with the biometric scans taken at camps by contracted third-party vendors.

Shortage of UIDAI-certified operators continues to be a challenge, however. Joint director of Directorate of Census Operations (Tamil Nadu), M.R.V. Krishna Rao, said the enrolment in Chennai district began last December.

Residents will receive their 12 digit UID number, either through registered post or SMS. The Aadhaar cards will be issued later. Residents who have missed out on all phases of the enrolment will also be able to avail of the service at the permanent NPR centres.
