The Chennai Corporation council is set to permit additional parking lots for the city, soon.

Except for eight of the 361 spots identified for potential lots by the traffic police last year, parking facilities will soon be earmarked in the areas, for use by motorists after the Corporation council approves the additional parking lots on Friday.

Based on the list prepared by the traffic police, the civic body will permit entities such as TEXCO (Tamilnadu Ex-Servicemen’s Corporation Limited) to manage the parking lots on congested stretches in various parts of the city. TEXCO will share 70 percent of the revenue with the Corporation.

The Chennai Corporation will also set up a parking management cell to tackle the challenges faced by owners of the 26 lakh motorcycles and 6 lakh cars in the city. The parking management cell will facilitate commissioning of additional street-parking lots in more stretches.

The zonal officials have already submitted a list of 353 spots that will increase the number of parking lots in their zones. TEXCO is already managing 145 parking lots in Chennai Corporation limits.

Around 490 parking lots will be functioning across the city after the Chennai Corporation completes the work on demarcating their usage. A number of roads such as Harris Road, Rajaji Salai, Wallajah Road, Ramanathan Salai, Vepery High Road and EVK Sampath Salai in Royapuram zone will soon get new parking lots. Royapuram zone is expected to get around 120 parking lots. Anna Nagar will have more than 70 new parking lots on roads such as Pulla Avenue, Second Avenue and Konnur High Road.

Zonals officials from zones including Tondiarpet, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Ambattur, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar and Perungudi have submitted lists of identified spots.

The civic body had joined hands with the traffic police last year to find a solution to the increasing number of obstructions on roads caused by haphazard parking. A coordination committee on traffic obstructions had discussed emerging issues pertaining to traffic congestion last year.
