Actor Kamal Haasan and distinguished scientist A. Sivathanu Pillai were among the six who received the Tamizhan awards at a function here on Friday.

The awards instituted by the ‘Puthiya Thalaimurai’ news channel were distributed to achievers in the fields of social service, business, science and technology, sports, Tamil literature and entertainment.

The ‘Nambikai Natchathiram’ awards in the six categories were also received by a galaxy of achievers.

Actor Kamal Haasan, who received the award in the entertainment category from filmmaker K. Balachander, said he would have retired if a sense of accomplishment in his field had reigned supreme in his mind.

Kavi Ko S. Abdul Rahman, who received the award in the Tamil Literature category, too said he was yet to experience a sense of accomplishment and was working on an ‘international epic’.

Director of Kasturi and Sons N. Ram and SRM University Chancellor T.R. Pachamuthu gave the Tamizhan award for science and technology to Mr. Pillai. Krishnammal Jegannathan received the Tamizhan award for social service. Nambikai Natchathiram award in the same category was received by Arun Krishnamoorthy. The award for the business category was presented to executive chairman of Murugappa Group A. Vellayan. Vanmathi got the Nambikai Natchathiram award in the category for her trailer homes. Dhanraj Pillay and footballer Radhika received the awards in the sports category.

The Hindu was a print media partner for the function.
