Napier bridge, one of the city's oldest bridges, is all set for a stunning makeover once the sun goes down in two weeks' time.
For, over the next fortnight, the firm appointed by the Chennai Corporation to create special lighting effects at a cost of Rs.1.62 crore on the structure will have completed the work.
Looked at from a distance, it will appear as if the bridge is floating on the water. This effect is being created with special lights beneath the bridge, according to sources in the civic body.
Officials said that the light fittings on the arches of the two bridges have been installed and a trial run is on. Imported metal halide lamps from UK have been used to generate the special effects.
464 bulbs, fixtures
A combination of lighting effects has been created on the arches and surface using 464 bulbs and fixtures. The private firm will maintain the lighting and fixtures for a year.
The beautification is being done as an additional attraction for visitors to the Marina Beach, which has undergone a major facelift.
The Napier bridge is named after Baron Napier of Magdala, who was Governor of Madras Presidency.
Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation's proposal to create a sound and light show at the Victoria Public Hall is yet to take off. Tenders have been called for the third time for developing the content for the show.
Officials said the bidder for the second tender expressed his inability and withdrew his offer.
