It is going to be hot and sultry today, but that’s classic Chennai weather anyway. When you go out to vote, it may be tough to predict how high the political temperatures may rise, but the weatherman says the ambient temperature in the city is expected to be around 35 degree Celsius.
However, the sea breeze will kick in as usual, saving the city from even more gruelling heat and keeping the day temperature close to normal. On Wednesday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam registered 34.6 degree Celsius and 35.3 degree Celsius. But, those who are outdoors may feel like it is 38-39 degree Celsius, said officials of the meteorological department.
S.R. Ramanan, director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said people may feel the heat more in the afternoon as the land absorbs and re-radiates it around 2 p.m. or 2.30 p.m.
Around this time of the year, the sun is up by 5.53 a.m. and sets as late as 6.23 p.m. For the past two days, the temperature has been steadily rising from 5 a.m. and touches 30 degree Celsius as early as 8.30 a.m. By 11.30 a.m., it peaks to the day’s maximum of 34 degree Celsius and the humidity level is at 70 per cent. Only after 5.30 p.m., does the temperature begin to dip, according to meteorological officials.
