Subways on the Anna Salai are of immense help to pedestrians who otherwise have to wind their way through heavy traffic. If not for these subways, crossing the broad road from one side to the other will become an ordeal.

There are about seven subways in the entire stretch of the road — Napier Bridge to Little Mount. One can see people climbing in and out of this facility day and night.

Thanks to the Highways Department, these subways are periodically maintained and guarded to the best of their ability to facilitate the public. Most of these have been given a fresh dab of paint now.

To make them look attractive, they have been painted with two colours. “This is one of the regular maintenance work carried by us. We have spent a sum of nearly Rs. 2 lakhs on each one,” said an official of the Highways Department.

The authorities are of the view that the riot of colours will attract more people to utilize the facility. In addition to this, for the safety and security of people, the department has arranged to deploy security personnel round-the-clock.

The department is gearing up to keep the area illuminated 24 hours. It is planning to have better lighting facilities.

“Even now we have a power back up and definitely 50 per cent of the lights would function during a power failure. All these are part of our periodical maintenance and we have more plans in the anvil,” say the officials.
