Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday launched the Dr. A. Ramachandran’s Diabetes Hospital in Guindy, a state-of-the-art centre dedicated to provide clinical care, promote research and propagate prevention of diabetes.

The unveiling of a plaque by the Chief Minister at the Secretariat was watched via video-conferencing by a gathering of staff, well-wishers and patients at the five-storeyed complex.

Dr. A Ramachandran, chairman and managing director, Dr. A. Ramachandran’s Diabetes Hospitals, Egmore, said the new state-of-the-art facility would help improve and increase the reach of clinical care for diabetes, which is estimated to affect over 60 million people in the country.

Another important aim would be to evolve models for early diagnosis and management of diabetes.

The hospital has aspired for international standards in establishing facilities for comprehensive diabetes care under one roof, he said.

The features of the hospital, which is spread over about 50,000 sq ft, include specialised ICU for diabetes emergencies, surgery theatres and exclusive divisions for oro-dental hygiene, nutrition, eye care, diabetes foot care and renal care, said Dr. Samith Babu Shetty, hospital director.

Automated lab

A fully automated laboratory employs a high level of integration of bio-chemical, hormone analysis, haematology, immunology and electrology functions.

The hospital also has in-patient capacity for 100 patients.
