March 09, 2013 11:11 am | Updated 11:11 am IST - CHENNAI:

It was all about proactive measures and recognition at various organisations in the city on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Friday.

Women lawyers inaugurated a toll-free helpline. The number, 1800-102-7068, is an effort to reach out to women lawyers facing personal, legal and social problems.

According to advocate L. Margaret, the effort would also help to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in the legal profession in the State.

Meanwhile, at a celebration at SRM University, the Union minister for environment Jayanthi Natarajan said the UPA government had suggested setting up a common and dedicated women’s helpline for lodging complaints of harassment. She exhorted college girls to volunteer to operate the helpline in police stations.

To commemorate the day, Air India operated all-women-crew flights to international and domestic destinations on Friday.

The first flight in the domestic sector took off at 5 a.m. to Port Blair from Chennai.

Two international flights, one to Singapore and another to Paris, were operated from New Delhi with all-women crew.

Women from various fields and Air India’s regional manager (Gulf) Seema Srivastav were honoured on the occasion. Air India launched its all-women-crew flights in November 1985, a press release said.
