Dotted with temples, tanks and old eateries, Ward 124 occupies the heart of Mylapore and some parts of adjacent Mandaveli.
Streets in this ward bustle with activity almost everyday. A large number of people from across the State pour into the locality during the car and float festivals of the Kapaleeshwarar temple. The ward is a confluence of the modern buildings and traditional Agraharams and has more of middle class population and some slum tenements.
The area has its own share of problems, ranging from parking woes to improper street lights. “There is a dire need to improve lighting in most parts of the ward,” said P. Balamurali, a resident of Luz.
Another problem mentioned by the residents is parking. Thousands of tourists visit the area and their vehicles are parked on the North or South Mada Street, along with those of people who come to the market.
“This causes inconvenience to pedestrians and makes it impossible for other vehicles to pass by. Vehicles should not be allowed into both the streets during evenings,” said S. Venugopal, a resident of North Mada Street.
While some residents want the Mada streets to be pedestrian-friendly, others do not want the old markets on the two lanes to be shifted. “We also need small bus services as there are many areas that do not have proper connectivity,” added Venugopal.
Meanwhile, J.P. Chandrika, councillor of the ward, said she had helped improve the infrastructure in the locality. “I am also taking steps to solve the traffic-related problems,” she said.
