Residents of Andal Nagar Extension Box Area in West Velachery, Adambakkam Post, have requested the authorities of the Greater Chennai Corporation to re-lay the battered Andal Nagar Extension Road.

A portion of the stretch on the eastern side, towards Andal Nagar First Main Road, Bhuvaneshwari Nagar, Velachery, has caved in.

The stretch connects Andal Nagar Extension I and II. R. Pavithra, a resident of Andal Nagar Extension I, says, “As the road has caved in, school van drivers refuse to come to these areas. Schoolchildren are forced to board the vans and alight from them only at Andal Nagar First Main Road, Bhuvaneshwari Nagar, Velachery. Two cars cannot pass through the stretch, side by side. Moreover, the road has shrunk drastically, forcing pedestrians to walk in the carriageway.”

Things hit an all-time low at night. As the stretch lacks sufficient illumination, pedestrians and motorists find it difficult to navigate it.

“During rains, rainwater stagnates in the caved-in portion, paving way for mosquito breeding. Residents are forced to keep the doors of their houses closed through the day,” says M. Preethi, a resident of Velachery.

When contacted, the Corporation official promised to re-lay the road at the earliest.
