The Chennai Corporation on Friday lighted up a 9-km stretch of East Coast Road from Kottivakkam to Akkarai with new streetlights.

Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy inaugurated over 653 sodium vapour lamps that have been installed here.

The Corporation opted for 250-watt sodium vapour lamps for this ECR stretch that covers wards 183, 185, 192 and 196.

The wards fall under the jurisdiction of Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones.

The stretch had been inadequately illuminated for over a year, even after merger of the wards with the Corporation as the erstwhile local bodies had been unable to install streetlights.

The civic body installs streetlights every 25 metres on bus route roads as per its norms.

The work was completed at a cost of Rs.1.51 crore.
