Amidst the melee of students studying hard to secure State ranks and get into a good group, there is this story of friendship between M. Akash and P. Eswaran, two students from the Kesavarajakuppam Government High School in Pallipattu, Tiruvallur that helped them exceed their expected marks in the Class X examination.

Both Akash and Eswaran come from single parent families, having lost their fathers at a young age and their mothers are daily wage earners. While Akash from Kesavarajakuppam has always been a good student, his friend Eswaran from TT Kandigai has mild mental retardation and has always struggled to study. Akash is the school topper with 480 marks, and centums in Science and Social Science, while Eswaran scored 259 marks with 81 per cent in science.

The two have always been friends, but during Class X, this bond was strengthened, according to E.M. Logamani, headmaster of the school. “Through the year Akash has ensured that Eswaran studied and the two would meet every weekend to revise subjects,” he said.

Akash also ensured that Eswaran had eaten and studied before he took up his own revision.

“Since both of us come from similar households, I understand how important his education is to his family,” Akash said. “Even though I am excited about my own results, I am happier that he scored so well,” he added.

“Akash is my brother, and I will always take care of him,” Eswaran said.

For their Class XI education, the teachers at their school have decided to sponsor the education of both the children. “Akash wants to join a private school and do medicine in the future, Eswaran plans to finish Class XII in the commerce stream so he can support his family,” Mr. Logamani said.
