Taking the RTI route

Joint meeting with civic officials based on RTI queries by residents in the neighbourhood.

Giri Ravanan, a longtime resident of Thirumullavoyal, has kept a cache of text messages in his android mobile addressed to Avadi Municipality officials, seeking to have defunct street lights repaired and overflowing garbage bins cleared, post-Vardah.

Response from the municipal officials had been prompt, but action on these complaints have not been taken, says Giri.

Now, residents of the neighbourhood are changing tack: they have decided to file RTI (Right To Information) pleas to various State agencies on major civic problems, including garbage collection, bad roads, poor water supply and lack of sanitation.

“Besides our regular petitions, we have now decided to use RTI," says Giri, who is secretary, Venketachalam Nagar Residents Welfare Association.

Poor garbage disposal and bad roads are two issues plaguing residents of Thirumullavoyal.

Most of the streets are sandy and Pachaiamman Koil Main Road, which connects northern Thirumullavoyal with the Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road and other neighbourhoods, including Avadi, Red Hills, Ambattur, Surapettai, Puzhal, Annnoor and Ayyapakkam, is ridden with potholes.

And then, repeated oral requests by residents of the neighbourhood to municipal authorities to ensure prompt clearance of garbage has proved futile.
