The Central Crime Branch of the city police on Friday arrested M.G. Dhamu, sub-registrar of Neelankarai, for registering a settlement deed in favour of a person while his father was on his death bed and denying a share in the property to his sisters.
Picthaimani (54) of Thiruvanmiyur held 19 grounds of land worth several crores adjacent to the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and East Coast Road.
On September 27, 2015, Picthaimani , a cancer patient, was admitted to a hospital . While he was in a serious condition, his son Sakthikumar prepared a settlement deed which bequeathed the entire property to him.
On October 9 the same year, Sakthikumar got the property registered in his name with the help of the sub-registrar. An investigation officer said that following a complaint from Subitha (35), a daughter of the deceased, the case was registered against Sakthikumar.
During the investigation, it was found that the registration was done in fraudulent manner with active collusion of the sub-registrar, the police said.
The official had registered the document in his office while Pitchaimani was on a hospital bed.
But the document stated that he had personally visited a house in Palavakkam where Pitchaimani gave a settlement deed favouring his son.
Meanwhile, Sakthikumar filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking the quashing of the case.
According to the police, following a direction from the court, the sub-registrar was arrested for forgery and cheating.
