Plea to de-silt and deepen Adyar

Residents say that in most places, bunds have not been raised

Members of the Federation of Varadharajapuram Welfare Association (FEDOVWA) have appealed to the Kancheepuram district administration and Water Resources Department to de-silt, deepen Adyar River, and widen the bunds of river, which originates at Adhanur near Guduvanchery in Kancheepuram district. V. Rajasekharan, president, FEDOVWA, said, “The Adyar and its waterways should be de-silted, deepened and the bunds strengthened.”

It may be noted that after the members of Joint Action Committee of Varadharajapuram and Mudichur (JACOVAM) held a hunger strike on September 11, 2016, at Perungalathur to draw the attention of State government and Kancheepuram Collectorate to the issue, a massive flood-mitigation work began on the river. Residents however feel the work wasn’t carried out properly.

“At several spots in Rayappa Nagar, PTC Quarters, Krishna Nagar, Shanthi Nikethan, Ashtalakshmi Nagar, Mahalakshmi Nagar, Bhuvaneshwari Nagar, Varadharajapuram, and Amudham Nagar, Neminatha Nagar, and Sakthi Nagar, Mudichur, bunds have not been formed and wherever the bunds have been formed, the height of the bunds differ, from spot to spot,” the members said. As a result, during cyclone Vardah (Kancheepuram district received 17cm rain), water from Adyar entered Varadharajapuram and Mudichur, and rose up to a height of 5 feet.
