Passengers raise a stink over Chennai airport toilets

January 30, 2017 01:03 am | Updated 08:55 am IST - CHENNAI:

The poor state of toilets at the Chennai airport continues to irk passengers. It is to be noted that renovation work was taken up in some of the toilets where there are maximum number of users at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh sometime ago.

Passengers say that the continued lack of maintenance was causing them severe inconvenience. Madhavan Murthy, who flies often from Chennai to New Delhi and also Singapore says, “I complained on a few occassions but then gave up. I decided not to use the facility because I might end up with health problems. I am sure there is a part in our ticket where we pay for such maintenance too. It is a pity we have to put up with mediocrity.”

Many of the passengers have time and again expressed anger on social media over the stench in toilets at the airport.

Sukrity Goyal ‏@sukritygoyal posted: “ The washrooms are very filthy. Please get them cleaned.” Another user Srini ‏@srivegas tweeted: “Embarrassment to India and #Modi vision of clean India when an international airport can't have usable toilets.”

Airport director Chandramouli said steps have been initiated to arrive at a permanent solution for this problem. “We have given a contract to a new agency to fix this problem. I have also asked for regular checks and surprise inspection by our staff to monitor the maintenance. There will be significant improvement soon,” he said. All problems related to construction, including the false ceiling, were being addressed, he added.
