A proposal has been forwarded to the Chennai Corporation to develop an online application that can be used to offer building plan approval through a web portal, said P.R. Krishnamoorthy, regional head of eGovernments Foundation.
An e-governance consultant for the Corporation, Mr.Krishnamoorthy said that while ‘pre-sanction' of a layout can be sought online currently, the idea was to digitise the entire process and provide approvals over the Internet.
Speaking at the concluding session of Municipalika, a conference on sustainable cities and governance structures, he said that efforts would also be made to popularise the Corporation's existing e-services.
“All e-services that are currently available on the Chennai Corporation's website would be extended to residents of areas that recently got merged with the civic body within two months.
“Once we have an integrated system in place, we would proactively popularise online services,” he said.
While there is an option to pay property tax over the Internet, only about five per cent of those who pay the tax use this option, Mr.Krishnamoorthy said.
“Most citizens are still not aware of online services. This scenario must change,” he added.
