A group of well-known personalities, which had lent strong support to the jallikattu protests, late on Sunday appealed to those at the protest venues to disperse and instead come to the jallikattu arenas now that the State has promulgated an ordinance facilitating the sport.
“Leave the protest venues and come to the jallikattu arenas,” said Rajesh, who heads the Veera Vilayattu Paathukappu Peravai, at a joint press conference here. Stating that they had gone and discussed the issue with the Central government, Karthikeya Sivasenapathy, managing trustee of the Senaapathy Kangayam Cattle Research Foundation, said they had been constantly asking for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to be amended to allow jallikattu to take place without hurdles. The ordinance was a step towards that, and the group was always for working within the constitutional framework to find a solution.
