Lake restoration enters curriculum

September 25, 2016 12:00 am | Updated November 01, 2016 08:44 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Students of two colleges are now visiting various lakes across the city, as part of a course on learning about waterbodies.

It all started with a contest to involve youngsters in the sustenance of lakes. The contest, hosted by Goethe Institut, Chennai, involved students coming up with proposals to restore the lakes.

This ‘Urban Lake Restoration Project’ is part of the ‘Embrace our Rivers’ initiative by the Institut and Max Mueller Bhavan. Encouraged by the initiative, School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University and B.S. Abdur Rehman University have integrated the project in their curriculum.

While students of B.S.Abdur Rehman University have taken up the project in their urban design course, Anna University students will prepare a report on lake restoration as part of a three-week architectural design studio project. The best 15 design proposals will be presented at the Chennai Water Forum hosted by Goethe Institut to be held in October.
