Congress leader Kumari Ananthan on Monday observed a day’s fast at Valluvar Kottam to protest the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s images from the 2017 calendar of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photos had replaced that of the Mahatma in the calendar. “Only by following Gandhiji’s ideals can we hold on to our values as a country,” said Mr. Ananthan at the beginning of the fast, organised on the anniversary of Gandhiji’s assassination.

TNCC president Su. Thirunavukkarasar, who was present at the end of the event, praised Mr. Ananthan’s commitment to a Gandhian life and said the TNCC would continue the fight he has started. He said India has disrespected Mahatma Gandhi even as 120 countries have released commemorative stamps on him. Congress MLA H. Vasanthakumar, also Mr. Ananthan’s brother, was present at the event.
