A total of 15 equipment for maintenance of roads, narrow streets and beaches, procured by Chennai Corporation for Rs.1.6 crore, were commissioned on Friday.
Speaking at a function on Friday, Mayor M.Subramanian said that signboards had been placed at 100 locations to create awareness of the plastics ban at the Marina. He stressed the need for public cooperation in keeping the beach clean.
A beach cleaning machine for the Eliotts Beach has been procured at a cost of Rs.21.96 lakh. This was announced in the civic body's budget for 2010-2011. The Marina Beach has a cleaning machine, which was procured at a cost of Rs.32.68 lakh.
The equipment commissioned on Friday included six skid steer loaders, procured at a cost of Rs.56 lakh, to clear debris on narrow streets. The civic body had announced in the budget that it would be procuring 30 such machines.
Eight road-rollers were also commissioned, at a cost of Rs.81.52 lakh. The proposal for procurement of 10 road-rollers was made in the budget. Two of them have been procured at a cost of Rs.19 lakh.
A total of 342 such machines have been procured by the civic body in the last four years at a total cost of Rs.42.61 crore.
