In two weeks, Chennai Metro Rail will finally be ready with a mobile app for Android users, nearly two years after starting operations.

According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the app is being tested for technical and other issues.

“After seeing the response on the Android platform we will make it available for iOS users too. Also, when it is initially launched, it may have basic details and will be upgraded eventually based on feedback,” an official said.

At first, the app will show the list of stations, routes of the two corridors, distance between stations and fares.

Delhi model

Delhi Metro Rail has set a superb precedence of how a mobile app can be, providing as many details as possible for users.

Apart from the basic information, it shows how far a commuter is from the nearest Metro Rail station, the train timings, fares, the duration of travel and also the number of transits he may have during his travel. When a commuter clicks on a station, he will also get information about the nearest landmark or tourist spot and its location.

The facility to recharge through the app will also be available, Chennai Metro Rail officials said.

“We have looked at the options in Delhi Metro Rail’s app. The options to show the commuters the distance to nearest station and the landmarks around will be included a few months after the launch.”
