The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has planned to construct 82 more shops on a 1.1-acre land abutting ‘A' Road in Koyambedu as part of the development of the vegetable market. The work is expected to begin shortly and would be completed in 10 months. The existing vegetable market has 1,961 shops. As many as 777 shops are part of the fruit market while the flower market has 456 shops.
The shops to be constructed would have dimensions ranging from 150 sq ft to 600 sq ft. According to officials of CMDA, the 82 additional shops to be built were part of the original master plan but the construction was held back on account of a court case. The construction is being undertaken following clearance from court.
The proposed construction of the shops at a cost of Rs.5.61 crore would come with adequate space for godown and water supply, sanitary and electrical installations. Other improvement works in the market complex have also commenced recently. Bitumen roads are being converted to concrete roads to tackle the challenges of the monsoon. Around 2.5 km stretches of A, C and E Roads have recently been handed over to the contractor for the work.
The work has commenced on the western side of A Road and would be completed in six months.
Work on roads inside the market premises would start shortly.
