A 65-year-old man, who was in charge of the administration of a children’s home near Tambaram, was picked up by the police on Thursday on charges of raping a teenaged girl staying there. The 14-year-old girl, who was among the children rescued from the home, had delivered a baby girl in a government hospital in the city on August 31.

When doctors at the hospital grew suspicious, they informed the police. Based on a complaint from Kalpana Shanmugham, founder of the NGO Zonta Research Centre, police arrested Prabhudass and he was remanded to custody later in the day. After the preliminary inquiry by the police, the girl said that Prabhudass, who runs the home along with his son and daughter-in-law, had raped her many times, police added.

J. Prabhudass, his son, P. Paul Immanuel and daughter-in-law Jothi Plasingh (28) are out on bail, having been arrested on charges of land grabbing and intimidation in July
