Six persons, who allegedly kidnapped a businessman and demanded a ransom of Rs.1.5 crore for his release, were apprehended by the Chennai Police.

According to police sources, a gang kidnapped Hasan (21), who was returning home after closing his trade centre on NSC Bose Road on November 16 last year. They called his father, Haja, and demanded the ransom for his safe release. Based on a complaint from Haja, Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran formed a special team of the Secretariat Colony police to investigate.

Even as the team was following a tip-off, the accused released Hasan the next day near Tiruvallur and escaped. “We worked jointly with the Organised Crime Intelligence Unit (OCIU) of the State intelligence and gathered clues that led to the arrest of the accused. Two car drivers were part of the crime,” Mr. Rajendran told reporters on Saturday.

Police arrested Rajvignesh (21) and Rajkumar (34) of Ramanathapuram on Friday. Based on their confession, Muthukaruppu alias Abbas (21), Vanchinathan (29), Vignesh (21) and Muthukumar (27) of Ramanathapuram were apprehended on Saturday. A car used to kidnap Hasan was seized.

Investigation revealed that Vanchinathan was the driver of one of Hasan's relatives. The accused were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody.
