A five-year-old boy was run over by a bullock cart at a bus stop near Lakshmi temple on Tiruvottiyur High Road, Tondiarpet, on Thursday.

The police said, around 7.30 a.m., K. Malaiswamy (59), and his grandson S. Yojith, the victim, were enjoying a tender coconut by the road when the accident happened.

Yojith, a resident of A.E. Koil Street in New Washermenpet, was sitting on his grandfather’s bicycle when a passing MTC bus tried to overtake a bullock cart on the road. The cart was loaded with wood and the bus missed it narrowly but hit the bull. The scared animal ran amok and hit the bicycle. The boy lost balance, fell on the road and came under the wheels of the bullock cart.

A. Perumal (50), a resident of Tiruvottiyur, who was riding the cart, rushed the boy to the Government Stanley Hospital but he breathed his last around 8.10 a.m., the police said. The MTC driver, P. Pandian (31), and Perumal were arrested and charged under section 304A of the Indian Penal Code.

“The boy’s eyes were donated to the hospital after his parents Subramanian and Usha gave their consent,” said an investigating officer attached to the New Washermenpet police.
