Sasiperumal ended his 33-day fast for the prohibition of liquor in the State, on Monday.
On Sunday, after his health began to deteriorate, the police moved him to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. However, he ended his fast on Monday and was discharged from the hospital around 4.30 p.m.
“After much persuasion from his well-wishers, Mr. Sasiperumal decided to end his fast. So far, we haven’t received any response from the government for our demands and that is depressing. We are holding discussions on the next course of action,” said a volunteer. Sasiperumal would be returning to his hometown, Mettukadu near Salem tomorrow, the volunteer added.
57-year-old Sasiperumal had been on fast since January 30 at a private residence in Abhiramapuram demanding the closure of liquor shops in the State. Madhu Ozhippu Iyakkam which has been supporting his cause said they wanted the government to fulfil at least one of their demands. They want the government to ban the sale of liquor in the State to people below the age of 21, bar liquor shops in and around schools and hospitals and increase awareness on the effects of consumption of liquor.
