54 govt. services to go digital

The Chennai Corporation will lead the project to offer digitised government services to the people of the city. It is proposed to offer as many as 54 civic services in digital mode.

The Corporation Commissioner has taken over as head of the Chennai District e-governance Society from the District Collector. The electronic data processing cell of the Corporation has started work on exploring the possibility of implementing various aspects of e-governance in the city.

Currently, some of the services pertaining to the Revenue, BC, MBC and Minorities Welfare, Social Welfare and Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare departments are being offered online in the city. The District Collectorate, with limited resources, was unable to improve the e-governance system in the city. The Corporation has an agenda to offer more civic services, to be decided after consultations with the officials of the civic body and the e-governance Society.

“All welfare schemes of the government will eventually be offered through the digital mode. Residents will make all payments online,” said an official of Chennai Corporation.

Dedicated teams from the Corporation EDP Cell are likely to be the key agencies involved. The civic services are likely to be offered through the Urban Common Service Centres. Residents will also be able to get services such as community certificates issued online. Currently, Chennai Corporation issues birth and death certificates digitally.
