50% merit seats in dental colleges sought

March 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - CHENNAI:

A group of aspirants for postgraduate dental colleges in the State have submitted a petition to the Health Secretary, demanding that 50 per cent of the seats in private colleges be allotted to students on the basis of merit.

A student said the Supreme Court has directed that 50 per cent of the seats have to be surrendered to government’s merit quota, but only very few seats are given to students who appear for the Tamil Nadu Post Graduate examination. “Even in the seat matrix released on Thursday, there are only a few seats for students on merit,” the student said, adding that the colleges gave very little time to the students to appeal, with the counselling on Friday.

Health officials refused to comment, stating that the matter was in the court.
